Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812, Hello, Dolly! and A Doll’s House, Part 2 got the most Tony Award nominations this morning in their respective categories.
Natasha competes against Dear Evan Hansen, Come From Away and Groundhog Day the Musical in the all-important new musical category. Among the high-profile snubs, the new musicals A Bronx Tale, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Amelie got no nominations. Also bageled was the hit musical revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard, although star Glenn Close, who won for the role in 1995, was out of contention.
The nonprofits Manhattan Theatre Club and Lincoln Center Theater had an impressive morning. For MTC, both August Wilson’s Jitney and Lillian Hellman’s The Little Foxes were recognized in the play revival categories. They compete against two commercial productions, Present Laughter and Six Degrees of Separation. MTC also got five actor nominations: Laura Linney, Cynthia Nixon and Richard Thomas in Little Foxes, John Douglas Thompson in Jitney and Denis Arndt in Heisenberg.
The other new play nominees are J.T. Rogers’ Oslo, produced by Lincoln Center Theater, as well as Paula Vogel’s Indecent and Lynn Nottage’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Sweat. The four American playwrights all are enjoying their Broadway debut, but so far, only Oslo is doing vibrant business. A meticulously researched drama about a 1993 middle east peace accord, Oslo was recognized for actors Jennifer Ehle, Jefferson Mays and Michael Aronov.
And nominators didn’t forget LCT’s Falsettos, the revival of the William Finn musical in the fall: While Christian Borle wasn’t recognized for his Willy Wonka, he was nominated for his Marvin in Falsettos, and will compete for best actor in a musical against favorites Ben Platt of Evan Hansen and Andy Karl and his torn ACL from Groundhog Day, as well as Josh Groan (Natasha) and David Hyde Pierce (Dolly). Also recognized from Falsettos were the performers Andrew Rannells, Brandon Uranowitz and Stephanie J. Block.
Producer Scott Rudin scored with Dolly! and A Doll’s House, Part 2 (eight nominations). Director Sam Gold was nominated for Lucas Hnath’s faux sequel to the Ibsen classic, as was the entire cast: Jayne Houdyshell, Chris Cooper, Condola Rashad and Laurie Metcalf. Rudin’s The Front Page and Glass Menagerie were snubbed in the play revival category.
Dear Evan Hansen, about a socially awkward boy caught in a web of lies that go viral, has been considered a favorite for best new musical. But today, Natasha, an immersive musical excerpt of War and Peace that began at the nonprofit Ars Nova and is produced on Broadway by Howard and Janet Kagan, is getting extra attention for its 12 nominations vs. Dear Evan Hansen’s nine. Natasha was recognized for Dave Malloy’s book, score and orchestrations, Rachel Chavkin’s direction, Sam Pinkleton’s choreography, actors Groban, Denee Benton and Lucas Steele, Paloma Young’s costumes, Mimi Lien’s scenic design and Bradley King’s lighting design.
Dolly, which got 10 nods and is a commercial smash and heavy favorite for musical revival, competes against Falsettos and Miss Saigon, whose lead, 21-year-old Eva Noblezada, was a surprise nominee for best actress in a musical. Producers of the lauded Sunday in the Park with George took themselves out of Tony contention.
Stars were not neglected. Among the nominees are Bette Midler (Dolly), Kevin Kline (Present Laughter), Sally Field (The Glass Menagerie), Cate Blanchett (The Present) (A Doll’s House, Part 2), Hyde Pierce, Christine Ebersole and Patti LuPone of War Paint, Danny DeVito (Arthur Miller’s The Price), Nathan Lane (The Front Page) and Corey Hawkins (Six Degrees, who stars on television in a 24 spinoff.)
The Tonys, a joint production of the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing, will be voted on by 839 people, most of them in the industry, and presented on June 11 in a ceremony broadcast by CBS. Kevin Spacey hosts. Nominations were decided by a committee of 43.
