UPDATE WITH ADL statement: Patti LuPone and Jesse Tyler Ferguson have taken themselves out of the running for a Presidential Medal of Freedom in a Donald Trump administration.
LuPone (War Paint) and Ferguson (Fully Committed) appear in an anti-Trump video called Holy Sh*t, You’ve Got to Vote!, created by and starring Rachel Bloom, of the television series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. The song more or less likens Trump to Adolph Hitler, the Nazi leader. “Look obviously only Hitler’s Hitler/But break up Mein Kampf into tiny parts and it reads like Trump rant on Twitter.” (On a lighter note, the comic self-consciousness of the Funny or Die video, such as when Moby sings that it’s time to change the key, recalls The Song That Goes Like This from 2005’s Spamalot.)
Meanwhile, Donald Trump released a two-minute commercial that warns against the influence of “those who control the levers of power in Washington,” such as Lloyd Blankfein of Goldman Sachs, investor, activist and philanthropist George Soros and Federal Reserve Chairman Janet Yellen. All three are Jewish. Jonathan A. Greenblatt, the chief executive of the Anti–Defamation League, said in a statement that whether intentional or not, “the images and rhetoric in this ad touch on subjects that anti-Semites have used for ages.”
Trump’s son-in-law and close advisor, Jared Kushner, is an Orthodox Jew and Trump’s daughter Ivanka converted to Judaism.
