A New York judge declined to intervene in a battle for Jujamcyn Theaters’ lucrative concessions business — a win for Ambassador Theatre Group after acquiring control of the Broadway landlord.
Sweet Hospitality Group has handled drink and snack sales for Jujamcyn’s five theaters since 2010. Last month, Sweet Hospitality filed a lawsuit in New York Supreme Court to prevent Jujamcyn under its new regime from terminating the concessions contract. Hamilton producer Jeffrey Seller is raising as much as $14.5 million to revive Sweeney Todd on Broadway this spring, a test of whether a big-budget Stephen Sondheim revival can succeed in the post-Sondheim era.
Josh Groban (The Great Comet) will play the vengeful barber and Annaleigh Ashford (Sunday in the Park with George) will play the creative pie maker Mrs. Lovett, according to an operating agreement distributed to investors and reviewed by Broadway Journal. The musical, with a book by Hugh Wheeler, will be staged by Hamilton director Thomas Kail with a full orchestra playing the score, a person familiar with the revival said. Indecent grosses soared 60 percent to $606,000 last week, according to data from the Broadway League. It was by far the best week for Paula Vogel’s historical drama — about the controversial 1923 Broadway production of God of Vengeance — since it began previews in April.
Indecent had announced a Sunday, June 25, closing, but late on Thursday, June 22, lead producer Daryl Roth said she was inspired by the sales surge to rescind her decision and run it until August 6.
