TODAYTIX ADVANCE PROMPTS BOX OFFICE UNION PROTEST

EXCLUSIVE: Broadway’s box office union, which is in contract negotiations with the Broadway League, claims that the industry’s embrace of TodayTix Group represents an unfair labor practice.

The Treasurers and Ticket Sellers Union — Local 751 of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees — accused the League and two of its largest landlord members, the Shubert and Nederlander Organizations, of “unilaterally changing terms and conditions of employment…concerning the distribution of theater tickets.” The complaint was filed with the National Labor Relations Board in connection with TodayTix, the 11-year-old, easy-to-use app for buying tickets to Broadway shows and other cultural events.Continue Reading

SHUBERT-PRODUCED ‘SOME LIKE IT HOT’ TO CLOSE

The Broadway musical comedy Some Like it Hot will close on Dec. 30, just over a year after the $19.5 million show opened. Producers emailed a closing notice tonight.

The lavish adaptation of the 1959 Billy Wilder movie was nominated for 13 Tony Awards and won four, including for lead actor J. Harrison Ghee and Casey Nicholaw’s choreography. But Hot is burdened with formidable running costs — it needs to sell at least $900,000 of tickets a week to pay its bills (that’s the published gross, or “gross gross”), according to a 2021 recoupment chart reviewed by Broadway Journal. TONY AWARDS BOOST ‘STRANGE LOOP,’ ‘MJ’ SALES

Nearly 20 years in the making, A Strange Loop is having a moment.

In the seven days ending on Sunday, Michael R. Jackson’s newly minted Tony Award-winning best musical had its highest-grossing week since it opened in late April, at $845,000. That was up 23 percent from two weeks earlier, according to Broadway League data. (The week before the Tonys is a difficult comparison because Strange Loop, which also won for book of a musical, had seven performances instead of the customary eight.)Continue Reading
